QUARTZ RIDGE FIRE
September 12, 2023
Type 3 Team, Incident Commander: Nate Hallam
Daily Update – 9:00 AM
This update will now occur every other day unless significant activity occurs.
Highlights: Rain kept fire activity minimal over both the Quartz Ridge and Bear Creek fires yesterday. Today brings the strongest chance for heavy precipitation, which may lead to localized flash flooding to recently burned areas. Showers and thunderstorms remain likely through the week, with drier weather over the weekend. Precipitation will help scrub smoke from the atmosphere and limit smoke production. There are currently no Air Quality Alerts. Fire weakened trees and unstable soils may be affected by the rainfall therefore firefighters are closely monitoring the changing conditions and will only be engaging where and when safe to do so.
Quartz Ridge Fire: 2,792 acres | 77% of objectives achieved | 59 personnel assigned
The Quartz Ridge Fire received 0.35” of precipitation yesterday, bringing 24-hour totals to over half an inch and keeping fire activity quiet. Today, crews will continue to construct the shaded fuel break to act as a contingency line to protect private property. With more wetting rains in the forecast, no significant fire activity is expected this week.
Weather: Forecasts are calling for significant rainfall today, with a 70% chance the area will receive at least 0.25” of rain. No critical fire weather is expected in the foreseeable future as the outlook shows 50% or better chance of rainfall each day through Friday, before dwindling over the weekend.
San Juan National Forest Temporary Closures: Closure orders are in effect and additional information can be found here: Quartz Ridge Closure and Bear Creek Closure. Roads and trails within the Quartz Ridge Fire area are Quartz Meadows Rd (NFSR#684), Quartz Ridge Trail (NFST#570), and Quartz Creek Trail (NFST#571).
