Trail Springs and Mill Creek 2 Fire Update: November 1, 2023

Trail Springs Fire, Mill Creek 2 Fire
Publication Type: News 11/02/2023

Update: November 1, 2023

Type 3 Team, Incident Commander Scott Bovey, 122 Personnel

Trail Springs Fire | Size: 1251 Acres | Containment: 37% | Cause: Lightning

While there was little to no growth on the fire yesterday, firefighters are seeing that fire activity is starting to pick up as we move deeper into this warming and drying trend and the traces of last weekend’s moisture dissipate. Relative humidity levels are expected to hover around 20-25% for the next couple of days, which will enable fire behavior to increase with the potential to burn uphill into unburned areas. Growth is expected to primarily take place to the north of the current fire footprint. In preparation for this possibility, crews continue to prepare the Corral Mountain Road as indirect line. Aerial resources remain staged and ready in case they are needed.

Fire Danger remains Moderate despite recent winter weather, so it is important that forest users completely drown campfires to prevent unintended escape. Use the “drown, stir, feel” method to be sure it's dead out.

Mill Creek 2 Fire |Size: 122 Acres | Containment: 0% | Cause: Under Investigation

Dispersed smoke continues to be observed. Fire conditions are being assessed by aircraft reconnaissance and firefighters watching from a safe distance, which will continue until there is no longer any heat detected.

Weather: Temperatures will be a bit higher today than they have been the past two days. Relative humidity will be in the lower 20’s and winds are expected to remain light, primarily coming out of the southwest. Clear, sunny skies are expected to continue through the weekend.

San Juan NF Temporary Closures: An area closure is in place involving roads and trails in or near the Trail Springs Fire area (Middle Mountain area), including Forest Road 630, East Monument Road, at its intersection with Turkey Springs Road. Details of the closure are on the Trail Springs Fire InciWeb page (link and QR code below) and on the “Alerts and Notices” page of the forest website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/sanjuan/alerts-notices
