South Fork Complex Daily Update for August 20, 2023
South Fork Complex
Publication Type: News 08/21/2023
Current Conditions: The South Fork Complex is basically two major fires: the Pilot and the 3-9. Neither of these fires have grown significantly over the last 24 hours.
Firefighter priorities are to build contingency line on the west side of the 3-9 fire as this fire threatens the community of Hyampom. The second priority is to halt any northward movement of the Pilot Fire as the transmission line that provides power for the coastal communities Eureka, Arcata, Fortuna is due north of the Pilot fire.
The smaller fires, the Sulfur and Pellitreau have not grown and have nearly complete containment lines, Firefighters continue to work on them; however the numerous dead tree snags from the older Route Fire in 2015 have created especially hazardous conditions.
A community meeting is being held Tuesday, August 22nd at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held at the at the Veteran’s Hall - VFW Post 9546 located at: 9201 CA-3, Hayfork, CA. This meeting will be in-person.
WEATHER: An area of low pressure west of Central California will maintain seasonal temperatures today with a slight cooling trend through Monday. Temperature highs are expected to be between 76-86 degrees with lows of 63-37 degrees. Diurnal slope winds are expected with west-northwest winds over the ridges. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are likely in the vicinity of the complex again today. Gusty N/NW winds are forecasted for the upper elevations of the complex after 6pm Sunday.
