River Complex Fire update 08.16.2021

River Complex 2021
Publication Type: News 08/17/2021

The Haypress Fire continues to spread downslope to the east and has crossed the upper Coffee Creek area and is actively increasing in size as it spreads towards the top of Grouse Ridge. With a weak cold front predicted, better ventilation may occur, with risk of increased fire behavior over the fire area. Growth continues along the south flank of the Haypress Fire and continues to spread in Big Bend Creek and up to Adams Peak on Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forest border. Infrared data also shows the Summer Fire had significant growth to the north west, while the Cronan Fire showed some backing fire to the south west.

Today:

  • Contain fire to the south side of the Cecilville/Callahan Road on the north side of the Haypress
  • Continue mop up and patrol of existing control lines, monitor for spot fires and slop-overs on all River Complex fires
  • Conduct firing operations where feasible to strengthen containment lines and remove available fuels for the fire to consume
  • Continue direct and indirect line construction and firing operations on the north side of the Summer and the south side of the Haypress to keep the fire from progressing towards communities
  • All fires within the River Complex are being managed under a full suppression tactics plan

Fire Behavior: Observed fire behavior included group tree torching and moderate duration crown fire runs in extremely dry fuels and vegetation in steep terrain. Crews on the ground reported moderate fire activity overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

Weather: A cold front will push through the region today with slightly cooler and drier air filtering in. The front will clear out much of the upper-level drift smoke from the area, although some lingering smoke is expected in the steeper drainages. Winds will increase with the clearing and increased mixing, resulting in better ventilation across the fire area. The increased ventilation coupled with more sunshine reaching the ground will result in elevated fire weather conditions Monday. Expect the greatest fire weather potential by late afternoon, after the inversion lifts and peak mixing occurs.

Fire Statistics:

  • Total complex 44,117 acres (3,086 acres growth) 10% Containment
