River Complex Fire update 08.11.2021

River Complex 2021
Publication Type: News 08/12/2021

The potential for extreme fire behavior is expected to continue increasing this week as temperatures rise and dry thunderstorms move into Northern California. Extremely dry fuels, with hot, dry, windy weather and steep topography are aligned with the head of the Haypress and Summer fires.

A virtual public meeting will be held at 5:00 pm this evening using Facebook Live on the Klamath National Forest Facebook page. An operations update, fire behavior, weather, smoke, closure and evacuation information will be provided by California Interagency Incident Management Team 14, Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, and the Klamath National Forest. Questions can be posted before or during the meeting to be answered by officials.

Yesterday: Night operations monitored and patrolled in key areas where fires were backing toward Summerville and along the South Fork of the Salmon River. The wildland fire module assigned to Coffee Creek continued assessing structures in that area.

Today:

  • Contain fire to south side of the Cecilville/Callahan Road on the north side of Haypress Fire.
  • Contain the slop-over on north side of Cronan Fire and tie the line back into 51 Road.
  • Continue direct and indirect line on north side of the Summer Fire to keep fire from progressing into the Summerville area. Continue readiness for structure defense in Summerville area on the Haypress and Summer Fires.
  • All fires are planned for full suppression.

Fire Behavior: Smoke continues to impact the region, particularly in the steeper drainages and complex terrain. Until the inversion and smoke lifts, low to moderate fire behavior is observed. As conditions warm and as the predicted dry thunderstorms move through, fire behavior is expected to increase.

Weather: Hot, dry, and unstable weather continues over the fire area this week. Where smoke lingers, maximum heating potential is limited. Overnight relative humidity recoveries have been poor, increasing the potential for extreme fire behavior. A monsoonal moisture influx will bring elevated potential for dry thunderstorms Thursday into Friday.

Fire Statistics: Total complex 31,033 acres (2,313 acres growth); 7% Containment

  • Haypress Fire: 19,052 acres (1,473 acres growth)
  • Summer Fire: 10,280 acres (670 acres growth)
  • Cronan Fire: 1,665 acres (171 acres growth)
  • Multiple other smaller fires make up the total complex acres. All other fires are either out or in patrol status.

Evacuations:

  • Evacuation Order: Cecilville, Summerville and Petersburg.
  • Evacuation Warning: Sawyers Bar, Coffee Creek past Sugar Pine Campground in Trinity County.

An evacuation order means there is immediate threat to life and is a lawful order to leave immediately. The area is closed to public access. An evacuation warning means there is a potential threat to life and/or property. Those who require additional time to evacuate, and those with pets and livestock should leave now.

Road Closures: The Callahan-Cecilville Road is closed from approximately one mile west of the community of Callahan to Cecilville. The Sawyers Bar Road is closed from Forks of Salmon to Forest Road 40N51.

Forest Closures: The Shasta-Trinity, Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests have issued an order closing all of the Trinity Alps Wilderness through November 15, 2021. Trails and recreational areas are all closed.

The Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests have closed the Marble Mountain and Russian Wildernesses and the forest within the Salmon/Scott River Ranger District. All roads, trails and recreation areas are closed to the public through September 15, 2021.
