River Complex Fire update 08.10.2021

River Complex 2021
Publication Type: News 08/11/2021

A significant change in the weather is forecast for the next several days. A high-pressure system will bring hot, dry, and unstable conditions into the area today through the weekend. With the excessive heat warning will come the potential for extreme fire behavior. There is also potential for an influx of monsoonal moisture and thunderstorms, prompting incident personnel to adjust plans accordingly.

“Structures, the communities and the people who live there, along with firefighter safety are our first priority. While this has always been our focus, with limited firefighting resources, the forecasted weather and expected fire behavior, point protection and structure defense remains our highest priority,” said Operations Section Chief Jeff Crandall

Yesterday: Structure protection work continued in the Summerville and Cecilville areas. The wildland fire module assigned to Coffee Creek are assessing structures in that area. The Snow Fire has been turned back the Shasta Trinity Forest with the River Complex assisting with air support as needed.

Today:

  • Develop a plan to stop spread of the Haypress Fire to the east and southeast at Deadman Peak/Packers Peak ridgeline.
  • Continue focus on north side of Cronan Fire and tie line back into 51 Road.
  • Continue building direct and indirect line and conduct firing operations on the north side of the Summer Fire
  • All fires are planned for full suppression

Fire Behavior: Smoke continues to impact the region, particularly in the steeper drainages and complex terrain. Conditions are trending hotter and drier Tuesday into the weekend as high pressure builds across the region. An influx of monsoonal moisture will arrive Thursday.

Weather: Hot, dry, and unstable weather is expected over the fire area this week. Overnight relative humidity recoveries will be poor Tuesday night through the week. This will increase the potential for extreme fire behavior. Monsoonal moisture influx will bring elevated potential for thunderstorms Thursday into Friday.

Fire Statistics: Total complex 28,693 acres; 7% Containment

  • Haypress Fire: 17,579 acres (959 acres growth)
  • Summer Fire: 9,610 acres (532 acres growth)
