 River Complex Fire Update

Monday August 30, 2021

Fire Statistics: Total complex 104,996 acres, 23% containment.  Haypress 68,917 acres.  Summer 30,161 acres. Cronan 5,918 acres.

Etna, CA — Fire behavior will increase as the smoke starts to lift.  The Cronan will burn in unburned islands within established containment lines. The Haypress Fire will continue to burn at a moderate rate to the east, southeast and south.  Crews will be monitoring activity as the Haypress burns in the Coffee fire burn scar from 2014.  Summer Fire will spread to the East and South at slow to moderate rates, with a few short uphill runs.  Nearly 2,000 feet of containment line was established near Cecilville Road.  Crews will be utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to determine fire growth and interior activity across the River Complex.

Safety Message- Please prepare for the upcoming holiday weekend and be aware of forest and road closures.  Fire crews and heavy equipment will be on the roads, so please drive with extra care for your personal safety and the safety of the firefighters.

Fire Behavior:
Haypress:  Firelines around Coffee Creek/Three Sisters will continue to actively back to the east and south at moderate rates of spread.  Contained lines along Cecilville/Callahan Road will continue to smolder/smoke and the fire will continue to actively back to the road.  The Parker spot fire will remain active and grow to the north in uncontained firelines.

Summer Fire:  Areas with intense heat on the west end will continue to grow into Plummer creek, and will also back towards the Cecilville road at slow to moderate rates of spread.  The south end of the Summer fire has many areas of intense heat that will continue to spread. High elevation barriers such as rock systems and change of vegetation will limit fire growth.

Cronan Fire:  Unburned islands will continue to actively burn.  Crews will be working to hold the fire within containment lines, as rollout is still a threat.

Weather:  It will be a warm and dry day, with a lot more sunshine and less smoke than previous days.  There will be light winds with some ridgetop gusts.  Temperatures will fall 5-10 degrees, but humidity levels will remain relatively low. Skies will clear, but smoke may stick in drainages through mid-day.

Today:

  • Construct and improve fire line in all divisions where conditions allow, and personnel and equipment are available.
  • Point Protection in the communities of Coffee Creek, Summerville, and Cecilville
  • Scout, perform structure triage assessments, and build control line west of Coffee Creek,
