Inn Fire Update May 23, 2025
Acreage: 538 Percent Containment: 0%
Location: South of Mono City and North of Lee Vining, CA. West side of Mono Lake.
Cause: Under Investigation Structures impacted: 1
Summary:
The Inn Fire started at approximately 3:36 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. With dry, erratic winds the fire quickly grew and spotted from the west side of Highway 395, and a full response was ordered including fixed and rotor wing aircraft. Evacuations were shortly ordered and implemented by Mono County Sheriffs Office as they went door to door. One structure was impacted early on in the incident. By 9:45 p.m. the fire size was estimated to be at 538 acres.
Firefighting resources from the Inyo National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, CAL FIRE and nearby cooperators from Mammoth Lakes Fire Department, Mono City and Lee Vining Volunteer Fire Departments all responded to the incident. Strike teams and hotshot crews were also ordered and continue to arrive on scene.
Crews worked hard overnight and by the morning of May 23, bulldozer line was installed along most of the eastern edge of the fire on the west side of Mono Lake, with additional line on the northeastern flank below Mono City.
Evacuations and repopulations will not occur until this northern flank of the fire is secured by firefighters and the predicted winds out of the south no longer threaten this community with potential spot fires.
Highway 395 will remain completely closed in both directions until downed power lines have been removed and is safe to cross. Links to CalTrans District 9 and Mono County Sheriff’s Office for evacuations are listed on the Incident website: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/cainf-inn-fire-2025
