Management of lightning-caused Basin Fire north of Flagstaff to begin tomorrow

Heavy smoke impacts expected along Fort Valley Road

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., June 8, 2025 — Active management of the Basin Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire located 20 miles northwest of Flagstaff, will begin tomorrow.

Fire managers with both the Coconino and Kaibab national forests have spent the last several days preparing for firing operations tomorrow and Tuesday in order to restore ecological processes for about 9,000 acres of forest land through treatment.

Active land management includes the use of forest treatments, such as firing operations which help to reduce the build-up of forest fuels including excess pine needles and fallen logs. The reduction of these fuels creates a fire resiliant ecosystem that decreases the risk of catastrophic wildfire to nearby values  – such as private inholdings, roadways, infrastructure and timber stands. 

The Basin Fire is currently 1 acre and started June 5.

Smoke will be highly visible from Flagstaff and the surrounding areas during firing operations, and moderate-to-heavy smoke impact is anticipated on Fort Valley Road (U.S. Route 180). Motorists are asked to slow down and remain cognizant of firefighters working in the area, and to abide by all posted signage. Motorists should also anticipate delays when traveling in the area. 

A closure order for the area surrounding the Basin Fire is expected to be issued for public and firefighter safety.
