A UTV is loaded with hoses that were pulled out of the Kobe Ag area after firefighters determined the hoses were no longer needed. The hoses will be taken to the helibase in Nenana where they will be rolled, put on a pallet and trucked back to the fire cache for cleaning and inspection. Hoses that are in good condition will be stored until they are needed for another fire. Damaged hoses will be repaired, if possible. PHOTO: Logan LeFevre

Heavy rain near the Birch Creek Fire (#285) made some roads impassable on Aug. 17, 2023, due to deep water. Three UTVs that firefighters no longer needed were airlifted from the area by a Blackhawk helicopter. Firefighters also had to be flown out of the area. PHOTO: Shasta Lake Hotshots

A masticator shreds vegetation along the side of a road in the North Forties subdivision. Masticators shred, chunk or chop vegetation and small trees to lower the risk of wildfire, improve forest health, and reduce erosion. Photo: Brad Bramlett, Great Basin Team 3

A local crew creates a fuel break near the Nenana Cemetery off of the Parks Highway to protect the area from the Anderson Complex fires. This is a historic area where many of those laid to rest are victims of the Spanish Flu. The fuel break was done by hand to maximize protection while minimizing the impact of the work.

Firefighters were able to fly around the perimeter of the Rock Creek Fire yesterday. They identified structures, allotments and other areas of importance that could be threatened by the fire. Plans are being developed to protect these sites should that become necessary. A repeater was also put in place to improve communications for fire crews. Photos by Cody Cox/DOF
