Acreage: 3,536Containment: 0% Highlights: Although overall fire behavior was moderate with slightly cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity yesterday, the fire was more active on the southeastern perimeter near Koch Mountain Ridge and the northwest flanks near Spirit Lake. Additional crews arriving to the incident worked alongside heavy equipment and continued work to remove thick vegetation along Black Creek Road (Forest Road 2421) to prepare it as a containment line for the southern fire’s edge.

Highlights: Pacific Northwest Team 2, a Type 1 Incident Management Team, assumed command of the Cedar Creek Fire on August 5, 2022, at 8:00 p.m. The fire did not grow much in the last 24 hours. Firefighters worked along Forest Road (FR) 2422 and FR 2417 on Friday to improve access to the fire area. The historic Waldo Lookout was wrapped with protective foil to protect it in the event the fire was to threaten the lookout. Helicopters were used on Friday to keep the fire in check.

Only one new fire was reported on the Willamette National Forest today.  An abandoned campfire was found in the McKenzie River Ranger District and extinguished by an engine on patrol. The human-caused start is a reminder that fire restrictions are in place on the forest as of today.

 Westfir, Aug. 5, 2022 9:30 am – Things slowed down a bit on the Willamette National Forest yesterday. There were no new fires and no new holdover fires found from the recent lightning storm. Slightly cooler weather calmed fire behavior and allowed at least one fire to reach containment.

The Cedar Creek Fire, which was detected Monday about 3.5 miles west of Waldo Lake on the Willamette National Forest after a lightning storm, made a significant move north and east last night.  The fire is now around 1200 acres burning in heavy timber. The forest is closing the entire Waldo Lake Wilderness area as a precaution as the fire is headed in that direction, away from the community of Oakridge.

 A new fire called the Cedar Creek Fire, a holdover caused by the lightning over the area in the last few days, is about 500 acres and approximately one mile west of the Black Creek Trailhead on the 2421 road, about 18 miles due east of Oakridge, Oregon and 3.5 miles west of Waldo Lake, and about 6 miles north of Highway 58. An emergency closure is in place in the area. Hikers and other forest users are asked not to use trails off the Forest Service roads 2421 or 2424.
