Bighorn/Stateline Prescribed Burn Postponed 06-11-2024

LAJARA, Colo., June 11, 2024 – The Conejos Peak Ranger District announced today that the planned Bighorn/Stateline prescribed burn has been postponed for approximately two weeks. The district is pleased to have received the beneficial moisture from the last storm. However, it was significantly more moisture than anticipated when we announced the planned burn on June 6, 2024.

LA JARA, CO, June 3, 2024 – With favorable conditions in the forecast, Rio Grande National Forest fire crews have begun preparing for the 1,000-acre Bighorn/Stateline prescribed fire project located approximately six miles southwest of Mogote, CO. Ignitions could begin as early as Tuesday, June 11. Two of the burn units are on the Conejos Peak Ranger District in Colorado and one 192-acre unit is on the Carson National Forest in New Mexico.

Expected break in winds not developing
LA JARA, CO, June 22, 2023 – Despite favorable vegetation and fuels conditions, the Conejos Peak Ranger District has decided to postpone the planned prescribed fires in the Mogote area. Fire managers have determined that an anticipated break in the windy weather pattern is not going to develop in time to meet project objectives.
Two Prescribed Fires Planned Near Mogote - June 19

LA JARA, CO, June 19, 2023 – Conditions are becoming favorable to begin ignitions on the previously announced Bighorn/Stateline Project near Mogote, CO. Weather and conditions permitting, crews will begin burning on or around Sat., June 24. This 700 to 900-acre prescribed fire will include 216 acres on the Carson National Forest in New Mexico and will be conducted in close coordination with their fire management staff.
