Smoke from Devil’s Thumb Fire Likely Until Monsoons Arrive

GRANBY, Colo. (July 14, 2023) – While firefighters have successfully contained portions of the Devil’s Thumb Fire, residents in Grand County, Boulder County, Gilpin County and surrounding areas may continue to experience the presence of smoke throughout the summer and fall until natural moisture controls the fire.

Yesterday, fire crews secured more perimeter line on the fire, increasing containment to 30%. Fire size remains at 95 acres. A weather station was installed in the fire area to help improve weather data collection and forecasting for the fire area. A radio repeater was placed in the same area to improve communications with crews during operations.

Yesterday’s rain helped to raise fuel moisture levels, and fire activity was minimal. Fire size is estimated at 95 acres with 10% containment. Steep, rocky terrain with sometimes chest-high blow-down is slowing progress for crews on the ground.
