Heavener Mountain Fire Update for Sunday, November 12, 2023

 

Current Status:  The Heavener Mountain Fire located on Heavener Mountain is approximately 2 miles east of Brandywine, West Virginia in Pendleton County. 

Estimated Acreage:  1078 acres

County;  Pendleton County

Containment:  100% contained 

Date and Cause Reported: The fire was reported on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.  The cause of this fire is undetermined.  

Resources on the Fire:  Approximately 70 firefighters and support staff, two 20-person crews, 1 dozer, and 2 Type-6 engines.

Cooperators: Pendleton County Emergency Management and South Fork Volunteer Fire Company. Fire personnel have traveled from Colorado, California, Oregon, South Carolina and North Carolina. 

Restrictions and Closures:  The West Side Shooting Range is temporarily closed to provide for public health and safety. Forest Service Road 151 is closed south of Stony Run.  Use caution and obey all road signs for your safety. Motorists should be alert for firefighter vehicles and smoke. 

Fire Weather:  Temperatures:  High 58, Low 33, Min. RH 45%; afternoon winds northeast around 7 mph late in the afternoon.

Fire fighters will work to: 

Secure perimeter and mop-up along control lines within 30 feet of all containment lines.

Continue to monitor and patrol all fire lines

Planned Actions

Continue to secure and hold lines throughout the perimeter of the fire.

Projected Incident Activity
  • Maintain FF safety by adhering to the 10 standard fire orders, 18 watch out situations, LCES, and the 2:1 work rest ratio.
  • Provide for public safety, protection of private property , and any critical infrastructure that may be at risk.
  • Limit the growth of the Heavener Mountain Fire on all divisions.
  • Minimize impacts to the threatened and endangered species such as the Shell Barren Rock Crest flora.
  • Implant fire management strategies which will mitigate and minimize disturbance to soils, cultural, and natural resource values within the current containment lines.
  • Minimize smoke impacts to the neighboring communities and Route 33.
Remarks

On Friday, November 10, 2023 the Blackhawk helicopter dropped 25.000 gallons of water on the fire.
