On October 24th, Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance for multiple fires off State Highway (SH) 73 and State Highway 87, approximately 7 miles west of Port Arthur, Texas. The fires are actively burning in a marsh grassland.
The H&H Complex is currently comprised of two fires. The North fire was estimated at 10,000 acres South fire was estimated at 1,200 acres during the first operational period. The acreage of each fire is subject to change as better mapping occurs.
In coordination with local fire departments, crews from Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Division of Emergency Management, Jefferson County EMC, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as well as several aviation resources responded to the incident.
Dozers constructed containment line where possible during initial attack and a marsh-master from USFWS assisted where the ground is too wet for dozers or other heavy equipment to operate. Two large air tankers dropped water, working to slow forward progression on both fires.
There are no road closures currently. Any information on road accessibility in the area can be found on www.drivetexas.org.
