The Gold Complex was discovered July 22 after lightning passed through the area and is made up of two fires - Mill and Smith.

The Mill Fire was three separate fires that burned together east of Whitehawk and south of Gold Mountain.

The Smith Fire is north of Highway 70 near south of Smith Peak.

These fires are being managed by California Complex Interagency Incident Management Team 10 under a full-supression strategy.

Significant Events

California Complex Interagency Incident Management Team 10 (CCIIMT) took command of the Gold Complex (Smith and Mill Fires) at 0600 on July 24, 2024.

500 residences were under evacuation until July 25. Only one evacuation area remains directly adjacent to fire perimeter.

Fire behavior has moderated with more of a creeping, smoldering behavior due to cooling weather and successful suppression actions. Red Flag Warnings expired last night on the eastside of the Plumas NF forecast area. General cooling the next few operational periods with good overnight RH recovery. Short range spotting is the main concern in the fire area.

ERCs in the 90th percentile with dry, receptive fuels.

Planned Actions

Planned actions for the next operational periods are to continue with mop up in all Divisions. Fire suppression repair discussions with the forest are ongoing and will be initiating repair activities the next few operational periods.

Weather conditions moderated with cooler temperatures and lighter winds. Red Flag Warnings expired the evening of 7/25. Fuels are very receptive and spot fires have a high probability of ignition. Short range spotting is a concern for operational resources.
