Incident Overview
Inyo National Forest (INF) fire crews have been planning for, preparing and conducting fuel treatment projects that are expected to occur through 2023. These fuel treatment operations include prescribed burning of vegetation thinning (slash) piles, with low-intensity understory burning.
Prescribed fire an important tool for the Forest Service mission to reduce unnatural vegetation fuel loading and restore natural fire regimes, which helps communities live more safely with fire.
Fire managers follow a risk-management approach when conducting these projects and mitigate impacts to local communities, residences, and other infrastructure. They will conduct prescribed fire activities during the safest possible “burn windows” in the coming months. Numerous factors including wind, humidity, air quality, fuel moisture and availability of fire crew personnel must be met before crews are authorized to move forward with burning.
Residents and visitors are asked to avoid areas where prescribed fires are being conducted. Some smoke may be visible. People should not be alarmed as the fires are carefully monitored. Local fire and government authorities are notified prior to burn days and kept informed throughout prescribed fire operations.
Updates on these 2023 planned INF fuel treatment projects, Casa Diablo Burn, Antelope Burn, and Lakes Basin-Reds Meadow Burn will also be shared on this InciWeb page, the Inyo National Forest Alerts webpage at Inyo National Forest - Alerts & Notices (usda.gov), and its Facebook social media page at https://www.facebook.com/inyonf.
