Mount Hayes Fire operations map for 8/24/2023

Mount Hayes Fire (#299) is a lightning-caused wildfire 7 miles south of Deltana off of the Alaska Highway near the Gerstle River. The fire started during lightning storms at the end of July.

For two weeks, Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection resources from the Delta station responded to the wildfire and protected private property and infrastructure. On August 10 at 6:00 am, a Type 3 Incident Management Team arrived arrived to help manage the Pogo Mine Road and Mount Hayes Fires.

The fire is being managed for multiple objectives including habitat restoration, point protection and preventing the fire from spreading to the Alaska Highway. Three public-use cabins owned by Alaska Fish and Game are being protected.
