Lobo Mesa Fire update

Ennis, MT  September 14, 2020- The Lobo Mesa Fire started September 12 at approximately 11:00 am between Cascade Mountain and Lobo Mesa in the southern Gravelly Mountains, in the head of the Cascade Drainage. The fire is approximately 50 acres and burning in a very remote area with poor access for firefighters.

The fire was active today with red flag conditions, including gusty winds and very low RH. Ground personnel directed bucket drops from two helicopters to slow the fire’s advancement. The plans for tomorrow include more direct bucket drops on new spot fires that develop in places where topography would align with prevailing winds.  Management action points (MAPS) will be established.  MAPS are identified landmarks that when fire crosses them planned actions are then implemented.

Forest Service personnel will continue to notify and educate the hunters and recreationists in the area.  Area closures are being considered at this time and hunters are asked to extinguish warming fires

The cause of the fire remains unknown and the fuels are mixed conifer with large numbers of beetle killed timber, compounded with a moderate amount of dead and down trees. There are no structures threatened.
