Monongahela NF Plans Prescribed Burns in Greenbrier and Pocahantas Counties 04-12-2024

Publication Type: Announcement - 04/12/2024 - 14:40

Monongahela National Forest plans to conduct prescribed burns next week in Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties, if weather permits. The purposes of these treatments are to re-establish fire’s natural role in the forest ecosystem, improve forest health and wildlife habitat, and reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires.

Prescribed burns in Greenbrier County, planned for April 16 - April 19, include:

  • Meadow Creek Units 1 & 2 – 243 acres
  • Rucker Gap – 384 acres

Prescribed burns in Pocahontas County, planned for April 17 - April 19, include:

  • Guinn Ridge – 1,462 acres (Pocahontas County)
  • Ramshorn Ridge – 1,005 acres (Pocahontas County)

Each burn area will be closed to the public on the day of the burn and may be closed for several days after. Signs will be posted on roads near the burn area before and during operations. Residents and forest visitors may see and smell smoke for several days. If you encounter smoke on the highway, slow down, turn on your vehicle’s lights and drive appropriately for the conditions.

Local radio stations will be alerted to burn activities ahead of time. When burning begins, information, photos, and maps will be available at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident-information/wvmof-monongahela-national-forest-spring-2024-prescribed-fire-operations.
