Devil’s Knob and Milepost 98 Fire Update for Sunday, September 15, 2024

KEY MESSAGES:

Mop-up and patrol continues around both fire areas as CIMT 13 begins suppression repair in places that are further along. This work aims to return the fire area to a more natural habitat; resources will put in water bars for erosion control and flatten out any berms from bulldozer use. As firefighters dig and put out smoldering stumps and hidden heat, containment percentage will increase.

CURRENT STATUS:

Devil’s Knob- Resources: 617, Crews: 17, Engines: 12, Water Tenders: 9

Crews continue to secure and strengthen hand line along the northeast edge of the fire. Firefighters were successful as they completed line around the last piece of perimeter to the south. Tethering operations along the Flat Creek drainage are ongoing, where heavy equipment is tethered to high-tension winches, allowing for dozers to access steep and rough terrain. This operation is helping to complete a portion of line on challenging ground.

Milepost 98- Resources: 128, Crews: 5, Engines: 3, Water Tenders: 1

Crews are backhauling hoses, finishing mop-up, and repairing hand and dozer lines. Interior smoke may be visible over the coming days but is within containment lines. CIMT 13 plans to transfer command of the fire to the local unit on Monday morning for ongoing patrol.

WEATHER / FIRE BEHAVIOR:

With cooler temperatures and higher humidity within the fire area, as well as an increased chance of precipitation, fire activity is expected to be minimal. This weather pattern will likely linger for the next few days, leading to smoldering and creeping fire activity.
