FIRE SUMMARY JULY 25, 2022

Wolf Fang Fire
Publication Type: News 08/08/2022

FIRE SUMMARY JULY 25, 2022

The Central Idaho Dispatch Zone is at VERY HIGH Fire Danger

Sunbeam (July 21):  The fire was located approximately 11 miles northeast of Stanley on the Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger District.  The 0.10 acre fire is out.

Poison (July 20):  The lightning fire is located approximately 17 miles southeast of Leadore on the Leadore Ranger District.  the one acre fire burning in spruce and fir is out.

Moose (July 17):  The fire is being updated separately and can be found on Inciweb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8249/

Woodtick (2 fires) (July 14):  The fire is being updated separately and can be found on Inciweb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8253/

Wolf Fang Fire (July 13):  The lightning fire is located approximately four (4) miles northeast of the confluence of Big Creek and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the North Fork Ranger District.  The 738 acre fire burning in spruce and fir is located in steep, rugged terrain.  The fire continues to creep down on the north side of the fire and has progressed to the south side of the ridge it is burning on.  Risk to responders and public safety are the top priorities for the Wolf Fang Fire.   Due to the inaccessibility of the terrain and snag hazards, Middle Fork Peak lookout and aviation are assessing the fire daily.

Banner Fire (July 3):  The 15 acre human caused fire located approximately three (3) miles north of Banner Summit on Highway 21 was called controlled on July 10.  Resources continue to patrol the fire.

To date, there have been 16 wildfires reported on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Weather:  Now that a trough that moved through Canada and brought some stronger wind has continued tracking east, high pressure will dominate the weather pattern through at least Thursday.  Temperatures will level off today before starting a warming trend Tuesday.  The high pressure will also mean lighter wind overall, with slope-valley interactions the main driving influence.  Humidity continues very dry with mediocre recovery.  The next chance for thunderstorms arrives Thursday afternoon.

The U.S. Forest Service, Idaho Department of Lands, and Bureau of Land Management in east-central Idaho will begin Stage 1 fire restrictions, effective at just after midnight (12:01 am) on Tuesday, July 26, 2022.  Stage 1 fire restrictions apply to federal, state, state endowment, private forestland and rangelands within the designated area.  The forest is asking visitors to be aware of the VERY HIGH fire danger for the Salmon-Challis National Forest.  For today, ensure your campfire is dead out.  If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave!  One Less Spark Means One Less Wildfire.

Nationally, there are 21 uncontained large fires being managed under a full suppression strategy and 105 large fires managed under a strategy other than full suppression.
