Red Rock: Start date September 2, 2024, caused by lightning. Located approximately two miles east of Yellowjacket Guard Station on the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District.

The latest estimate for the fire's size remains 2,570 acres, with 0% containment. Yesterday, firefighters made progress by clearing additional roads, which allowed them to get closer to the fire and more effectively attack the northern edge. Today, they will use both direct and indirect strategies to fully suppress the fire on the north, west, and east sides. They will also begin assessing the southern edge to determine how far the fire has spread and what resources are needed in that area.

Structure protection crews continued their efforts by assessing and implementing protection plans made good progress along the Panther Creek Corridor yesterday.  In addition, they installed two water tanks that helicopters may use to fill buckets which can then be dropped on fire areas.  Today, these crews will expand their efforts further along the eastern portion of the Panther Creek Corridor.

Black Eagle: Start date August 5, caused by lightning. Located about 12 miles west of Forney on the North Fork Ranger District within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.

The latest estimate of the fire’s size is 5,914 acres, with 0% containment. Yesterday, fire crews completed their structure protection plans at Bighorn Crags Camp. With improved weather conditions aerial surveys were conducted, confirming snow on the ground is helping to keep the fire in its current footprint. Today, firefighters to the east of the fire are ready to deploy sprinklers and hoses in the Yellowjacket community, Bighorn Crags Camp, and the Black Eagle Mine area as needed. Incident management will continue to monitor the fire’s behavior on the western edge.

WEATHER:

Today we expect increasingly warm, dry weather, with temperatures in the low 60’s and humidity as low as 23%.  Winds will be blowing out of the SW at around 15 mph, with gusts up to 26 mph.  Cooler, wetter weather is expected to return to the area as early as Sunday evening.
