Thunderstorms yesterday in the Four Corners Fire area produced ridgetop winds up to 50 mph, lightning, and rainfall. While the precipitation was helpful in limiting fire behavior, it did not occur long enough or with enough volume to put the fire out. Crews are patrolling the Four Corners Fire area watching for and suppressing any new starts from lightning or spot fires created by winds. Today will bring cooler temperatures and winds will continue to gust from 20-25 mph this morning but will decrease this afternoon. Continued interior creeping, smoldering, and torching is expected. Established containment lines on the Four Corners Fire held through the weather. The Four Corners Fire is now 55% contained with continued progress on the east flank, as crews work to mop up and strengthen fire lines above West Mountain Road. This includes eliminating ladder fuels by removing the lower limbs and cleaning up the ground at the tree’s base in order to reduce tree torching. Creating and maintaining an environment that is safe for the residents of French Creek and Campbell Creek to return home is of the highest priority.
Firefighters will continue to make a direct attack in Willow Creek, working from east to west up the drainage in steep and rugged terrain. Helicopters have played a large role in supporting this work. A team of eight helicopters will continue this cooperative effort today as long as weather permits.
Weather: Temperatures will drop into the 70’s today, with slightly higher humidity and winds gusting 20-25 mph in the morning, then dropping off and shifting to the northwest. Conditions are expected to persist into the weekend. Fire Restrictions: There are currently no fire restrictions in the area, but residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise extreme caution if building campfires. Fire restrictions are determined by interagency guidelines including a “persistence of fire danger” in terms of fuel moisture levels and long-term weather forecasts. A security guard is posted at the intersection of Cabarton and Snowbank Road and will not allow individuals through.
