The Forest Service Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team assigned to the Wapiti Fire has completed its emergency assessment of the fires. One of the main objectives of their assessment is to identify critical values at risk of additional damage due to recent wildfires. Once they identify those values, they outline the risks and suggest mitigation actions (treatments) to minimize future risk.

The warm and dry weather will continue, and afternoon winds are predicted for 10/8/24 with gusts up to 25mph. There is some heat on the northwest side of the Frog fire within the current perimeter, and firefighters are extinguishing it with backpack pumps. On the Wapiti fire, firefighters removed slash around Stanley Lake Road and back hauled hose and pumps from the fireline.

Wapiti Fire: Location: near Grandjean, ID. Reported: July 24, 2024, Cause: Lightning. Size: 126,817 acres, Completion: 80%, Total Personnel: 186. Frog Fire: Location: east of Clayton, ID. Reported: September 7, 2024, Cause: Lightning. Size: 3,020 acres, Containment: 87%, Total Personnel: 34.

Special Emphasis: Yesterday evening, Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT) #3 took command of the Wapiti and Frog Fires. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the Stanley Basin is rated green today which indicates good air quality.  You can check air quality and the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map at https://www.airnow.gov/.

Wapiti Fire Soil Burn Severity Data ReleasedBurned Area Emergency Response (BAER) specialists from the USDA Forest Service have finalized the Soil Burn Severity map for the ~125,000-acre Wapiti Fire. Soil burn severity is classified into 4 levels: unburned, low, moderate and high.
