Crews completed 544 acres of treatment on Oct. 10. They will return for more ignitions on Oct. 11. The public should expect to see smoke throughout the day.

The prescribed fire is split into two units (map). The 1,350-acre La Jara Unit is adjacent to Taos Pines and the 510-acre Apache Unit, which was partially burned in 2021, is next to Angel Fire.

Crews will apply fire to the understory of forested areas, targeting fuels on the forest floor, such as leaf litter, downed branches, and brush. The fire may fully burn occasional single trees or stands, which will help create an open canopy.

Ignitions are expected to last three to six days. Once completed, crews will begin a long-term patrol and monitor plan until the fire is called out.

Work is part of the La Jara Fuels Reduction and Restoration Project, which has been ongoing since 2005.
