Long Tom Fire flames in the timber, 9-8-24

The Long Tom Fire was first detected on Sunday, September 8, 2024 burning in open grass and timber on the southeast corner of the Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area in Butte-Silver Bow County. The fire is currently 110 acres and has burned east-northeast of Mount Haggin onto Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest land as well. The fire is under Montana DNRC wildfire protection. The area is remote and difficult to access, and initial firefighting resources consisted of DNRC helitack firefighters, a Type 2 helicopter, and smokejumpers. Helicopter bucket drops were used to minimize fire spread Sunday with firefighters working yesterday and today to identify opportunities for direct attack, building control line and extinguishing heat and flame directly adjacent to active fire.

The DNRC County Assist Team assumed command of the fire on Tuesday, September 10 at 6 a.m.

Current resources on the fire include one Type 1 Hotshot crew, two Type 2 initial attack hand crews, 9 smokejumpers, and one Type 2 DNRC helicopter.

There are no structures threatened at this time, but the Continental Divide Trail is impacted and the public is asked to avoid the area and watch for possible area, road, and/or trail closures. Butte-Silver Bow County and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest are under Stage 1 fire restrictions.

Current Weather
Weather Concerns

Blustery west to northwesterly winds are expected today with dry conditions persisting through Tuesday. Overnight humidity recoveries are expected to be poor through Wednesday before a major pattern change to wetter and cooler conditions begins. Ahead of the cooler weather pattern, the winds and low humidities increase concerns for elevated fire behavior.
