The Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5, Incident Commander Joe Sampson, assumed command of the fire at 6:00 AM on Monday, September 9, 2024.
The fire was started by lightning and grew quickly during a wind event on August 23.
The primary values at risk are the private properties along the edge of the Bitterroot National Forest on the east side of the fire. This is where firefighting resources have been focused. The western portion of the fire is burning in remote, rugged terrain with little to no access for firefighting resources. West of the fire lies the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.

Projected Incident Activity |
With cooler temperatures and recent precipitation accumulations fire activity is expected to be at a minimum for the next 48 hours. Fire movement will be limited to creeping and smoldering will continue as temperatures remain low. |
Weather Concerns | Rain is expected to gradually end through Friday morning with a few showers possible before noon as cloud coverage will decrease throughout the day. Temperatures will range from the high 50's to low 60's with winds at 5-10 mph by afternoon and becoming more southwest. Throughout the day and into the weekend winds will be driven by terrain and varying at times in more complex terrain and drainage basins. |
