The Lockett Fire started on June 29 and is located approximately 12 miles east of Tusayan along the Coconino Rim, between Forest Road 307 and Forest Road 310. It is currently 16 acres burning in ponderosa pine forest, moving with a slow rate of spread and consuming pine needle duff and dead-and-down woody debris and stumps on the forest floor. This fire is burning in the footprint of the 2014 Belknap Fire.

The Lockett Fire will be managed in a confine and contain strategy within designated areas to reduce fuel loads and promote healthier landscapes.

Significant Events

Crews are conducting preparations along the perimeter of the designated area, which includes Forest Road 307 on the north/northeast edge, Forest Road 310 along the west/southwest edge, and a dozer line constructed during the 2014 Belknap Fire along the southeast edge.

Planned Actions

Crews are preparing the perimeter of the designated confine and contain area, removing flammable materials along Forest Roads 307 and 310, as well as strengthening the pre-existing dozer line from the 2014 Belknap Fire to complete the containment perimeter.

Projected Incident Activity

Fire continues to creep at a low rate of spread through forest floor fuels (pine needles, dead and down trees, and stumps) in a draw along the Coconino Rim. 

Remarks

Hand and aerial ignitions are expected to begin this weekend after winds stabilize.
