Delta Lake and West Zone Fires Fact Sheet July 22 2021

Related Incident:
Publication Type: Announcement

RECORDED FIRE INFORMATION UPDATE FROM WEDNESDAY, JULY 21ST AVAILABLE ON SUPERIOR NATIONAL FOREST FACEBOOK PAGE

SUMMARY: The Delta Lake Fire continues to be the only actively managed fire within the West Zone Complex. It is burning on state and National Forest System lands, adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), in dense blowdown. Local Forest fire resources remain available to respond and suppress any new fire starts. Previously reported fire starts on the Forest have been contained except for a 1/10th acre fire near Sundial which is being monitored.

YESTERDAY: As with the previous few days, mop-up operations continued with crews making progress establishing a 100-foot depth of cold containment line which will significantly reduce chances of the fire escaping from its current footprint.  The light rain and overcast conditions helped in moderating fire behavior.  Minimal smoke coming from interior smoldering fuels was observed.  Some of the structure protection crews continued to haul hose and pumps out of areas that are secured with contingency lines, while other structure protection crews, along the Echo Trail, continued to conduct assessments and interact with landowners to discuss ways to protect their property from wildfires.

TODAY: Taking advantage of the moderating weather conditions, the slow and steady mop up operations continue. An infrared flight is planned, which will provide images of any significant sources of heat within the perimeter and aid with future mop up activity.  Sprinkler systems, hose and pumps will continue to be removed from areas secured by contingency lines.  Structure protection crews will continue with assessments.  The Sundial Fire will continue to be monitored by Forest personnel but due to the location in the wilderness, presents challenges for ground access.

WEATHER: Partly cloudy with chances of rain and thunderstorms.  High near 78 degrees and minimum humidity of 62%. Southeast winds are expected at 4-6 mph with more gusty and erratic winds associated with the thunderstorms.

EVACUATIONS:  None at this time.

CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS: Campfires are prohibited on the Superior National Forest and in the BWCAW. Campfires are allowed in approved fire structures that have been installed and maintained by the Forest Service some fee campgrounds. More information: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/superior/home .

STATE RESTRICTIONS: Minnesota activated additional burning restrictions for the eastern portion of Roseau County and all of Beltrami, St. Louis, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Cook counties. More: www.dnr.state.mn/forestry/fire/index.html .
