The Willamette NF reduced fire closures around the Big Swamp Fire, opening many roads south of Diamond Drive (Forest Road 21). To provide for public and firefighter safety, the Umpqua NF issued a closure for the Camel Hump Fire. It closes the southeast portion of the Boulder Creek Wilderness and some roads outside the Wilderness. Weather: Last night brought cloudy, cooler, and damp conditions. By midday, clouds will burn off with temperatures in the 70’s. For smoke information visit AirNow.gov. Big Swamp Fire: There was minimal fire behavior yesterday with islands of unburned fuel within containment lines continuing to burn. The sprinkler system along the 2153 Road is effective in checking any advance of the fire toward the north. Elsewhere on the fire, crews are patrolling, mopping up, and repairing control lines. Potter Fire: Islands of unburned fuel within containment lines continue to burn, so smoke may be visible. Firefighters are using a sprinkler system along the 269 Road to check advancement of the fire toward the south and are patrolling for hotspots near control lines. On the east, north, and west, crews continue mitigating and transporting danger trees and repairing firelines and roads. Camel Hump Fire: There was minimal to no fire behavior yesterday. Fire crews continue using water from the hose lay, as a suppression tactic with minimal environmental impacts, to mop up remaining hot spots along control lines within the Boulder Creek Wilderness. Windigo Fire: There has been little to no fire activity near containment lines for several days. Firefighters continue repairing dozer and hand lines to restore natural drainage on the landscape. This work controls excessive sediment delivery to streams and protects important salmon and steelhead habitat. Fire crews are making progress grading, repairing, and removing hazard trees along the 60 Road to the Windigo Pass Trailhead on the Pacific Crest Trail. Resources: 12 hand crews, 10 engines, 4 dozers, 17 water tenders, 5 helicopters. Total personnel 551. Public Safety: As fire activity diminishes, hazards from fire effects and suppression activities remain. Crews and equipment continue to use roads for both suppression and post-fire suppression repair. Activities like brushing and chipping along roadsides and falling trees remain hazards on the landscape.
