Northern Rockies Team 5, Incident Commander Joe Sampson

Location:  14 miles west of Powell Junction, near Highway 12, Idaho

Start Date: 6/11/2025

Cause: Under investigation;  Size: 148 acres

Completion/Containment: 0%

Resources: 120 Total Personnel;  2 Engines;  3 Helicopters;   4 Hotshot Crews;  2 Initial Attack Crews

Key Message:

Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5, led by Incident Commander Joe Sampson, assumed command of the Post Fire this morning at 6:00 a.m. Key objectives are to minimize impacts to the Highway 12 corridor, recreationists, Forest infrastructure and natural resources.

Current Status:

The Post Fire is burning on a steep and rocky south facing slope near Highway 12 and quickly reached the ridge after it started Wednesday. While this early season fire had an active start, fire behavior has since moderated with the light precipitation received on Friday. Firefighters are taking advantage of reduced fire behavior and going direct where it’s safe and feasible. Crews are building direct line near Post Office Creek in the Lochsa River corridor and have gained access to a spot fire on the northeast side of the main fire. Three helicopters will support firefighters today as needed, and the crews will continue direct attack on the fireline as conditions allow.

Weather and Fire Behavior

A very dry spring has brought fuel moisture conditions not usually seen until July or August in the Lochsa River canyon. The fire received about .10 inch of rain yesterday and cloud cover made the fire less active.

Temperatures will be above average today with highs in the 80s in the canyon and 70s at ridgetop.  Light thunderstorms with small hail are possible. Smoke will likely remain visible from Highway 12 as larger fuels continue to smolder in the interior of the fire area.

Closures and Special Messages

There is a temporary flight restriction over a seven-mile radius from the fire. Highway 12 remains open and we ask the public to maintain traffic flow as helicopters may be dipping water from the Lochsa River. There are no Forest closures at this time.
