The Bachelor Complex includes the Little Lava fire located approximately two miles southeast of Little Lava Lake; the Backside fire located west of Mt. Bachelor; and multiple lightning-caused fires burning in the wilderness or at varying levels of monitoring and suppression tactics. 

The Deschutes National Forest has issued a temporary emergency fire closure for the Bachelor Complex. The closure was most recently updated on September 13, 2024 and will remain in place through December 1, 2024 unless rescinded sooner.

Planned Actions

South side and Northeast portion of Little Lava will mop up to secure perimeter. East side of Little Lava will be in patrol. Westside in suppression repair. Backside and 911 fires have completed the line construction and mop up and will be patrolled by air. 

Projected Incident Activity

12 hours: Stronger overnight humidity recovery. Shorter burn period with minimal activity through early morning hours.

24 hours: Warm and very dry. Warming trend with short low flame length runs in timber litter, dead and down and preheated live fuels.

 

Remarks

Incident includes approximately 30 fires, ranging from one-tenth acre to 80 acres.  The Backside Fire at 83 acres is 100% contained. The largest fire within the Bachelor Complex is the Little Lava Fire holding at 11,225 acres.

Weather Concerns

Current: Conditions on the Bachelor Complex featured the passage of a cold frontal boundary, which brought along strong and gusty southwest to west winds and light precipitation. Temperatures for highs are in the mid 60s to low 70s, with relative humidity lowering to around 25-30% late morning, before increasing through the afternoon. Winds were mainly out of the southwest, around 10-20 mph with gusts to 25-40 mph, shifting to the west in the afternoon and west-northwest in the evening. 

24-48 Hours: Over the next 24 to 48 hours, seasonable temperatures and dry conditions are expected to return to the fire area, along with lighter winds. On Thursday, highs are expected to be in the mid 60s to low 70s, with relative humidity down to around 25%. Winds will be lighter and terrain driven in the morning, turning to the west in the afternoon, around 5-8 mph with gusts 12-16 mph. On Friday, slightly water temperatures are expected, in the 70s, with relative humidity around 30-35% and terrain driven winds.
