Key Message
It’s June, and rising heat and low humidity are drying out grasses, brush, and trees—making them easier to ignite and faster to burn. Stay alert and visit MTFireInfo.org to learn how to prevent wildfires. One spark is all it takes.
Current Status
Crews and dozers made significant progress establishing control lines around the fire’s perimeter. The southern portion of the fire’s perimeter is lined. Helicopters provided aerial support, dropping water along the fire’s edge to strengthen containment lines and cool hotspots.
Today, hand crews and engine crews will continue constructing handline, tying into existing dozer line to reinforce the fire’s perimeter. The southwestern, eastern and northern portions of the fire are primarily in mop-up phase. Firefighters will continue extinguishing heat up to two chains, or 132 feet, into the fire’s perimeter. Steep terrain and hazard trees pose safety challenges.
Weather and Fire Behavior
Fire activity is moderate, with creeping, smoldering and tree torching. Temperatures are cooler today averaging 75 degrees. There’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day with the incoming storm systems wind could get up to 40mph. Smoke remains visible as isolated pockets of unconsumed fuel continue to smolder.
Evacuations and Closures
There are no evacuations or closures. The public is asked to avoid the area and steer clear of aircraft scooping water from Upper Holter Lake for their safety and the safety of fire personnel.
