Red Rock and Black Eagle Fire Update 09-16-2024
Publication Type: News - 09/16/2024 - 09:00
Red Rock:
The Red Rock fire is estimated today to be 3,055 acres and is 6% contained.
Yesterday, crews were successful going direct on the eastern part of the Red Rock fire near road 60210. They moved west along the edge of the fire until they reached road 60110. Additionally, in the eastern, western, and northwest areas the mopping-up process has begun, which involves extinguishing any remaining hot spots near control lines, removing dangerous burned trees, and handling logs to prevent them from rolling and causing additional fires or smoke. In the southern part of the fire, crews are still looking for the best ways to reach and fight the fire directly.
Today, crews will refocus their efforts to fixing and grading roads that were damaged during suppression efforts. On the western side crews will go direct when safe to do so, building handlines. Crews will also work to improve the firelines along the 60210 road. Because of predicted inclement weather, crews will move non-essential equipment away from the fire lines.
Black Eagle:
The Black Eagle fire is estimated today to be 6,451 acres and is 0% contained.
Yesterday, there was limited activity on the Black Eagle fire, specifically in the wilderness area. A hotshot crew focused on the southeastern part of the fire, where a few small spot fires had started. They built firelines to contain the fires, and aircraft assisted by making water drops.
Today, crews will continue direct action on the spot fires in Black Eagle Creek. Structure assessment personnel will keep checking the prevention measures already in place and address any issues they find. Additionally, with the incoming weather, efforts will be made to protect the roads by moving equipment away from the firelines to avoid causing extra damage during suppression work.
Weather:
The temperatures for today will be slightly cooler as compared to the previous day, with a considerably higher humidity level. Intermittent rain showers are forecasted, with the possibility of a thunderstorm or two in the area. The total precipitation for the day is 0.20”.
Fire Behavior:
Overnight precipitation will bring moisture to the fire areas, resulting in minimal fire behavior. Heavy fuel sources will retain some heat but with increased precipitation throughout the day, fire behavior will diminish even further. These conditions will help facilitate fire personnel conducting direct fire attack operations.
Forest Closures and Evacuation Orders:
No new forest closures or evacuation orders have been issued.
Evacuation Zone 1 is in “Go Status,” and Evacuation Zones 2, 3, and 4 are in “Ready Status.”
National Forest Closure Orders 04-13-24-017 and 04-13-24-019 remain in place.
