On July 24, 2024, a lightning storm that produced an abundant amount of fire starts across the Grangeville Dispatch Area ignited both the Ace Butte Fire and Anchor Fire on the Salmon River Ranger District. The Ace Butte Fire was detected on July 24, 2024, and the Anchor Fire was detected a few days later on July 28, 2024. Currently, the Ace Butte Fire is approximately 134 acres, and the Anchor Fire is approximately 115 acres.

Structure protection around National Forest Service Road #444, Square Mountain Lookout, and Moore’s Guard Station have been completed.

Planned Actions

Firefighters are now working to clear roads that would improve access to these fires.

Projected Incident Activity

At this time, fire activity is minimal, with interior portions of the fire putting up minimal smoke. Visible smoke is in the interior of each fire, likely caused by burning logs or stump holes.

Remarks

There are no closures at this time, but if fire activity increases, trail and road closures may take place.

Today, August 18, weather conditions will remain warm and relatively dry. Potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms is possible, especially going into Monday, August 19. Throughout the week, temperatures will range from the low-100s and decrease to mid-80s by Saturday, August 24. Breezy conditions will present themselves, with windspeeds up to 10-15 mph at certain times.
